Game Review: Payday - The Heist

Payday - The Heist is a new 4-player co-operative first person shooter developed by Overkill Software. released both on the Playstation 3 and on the PC on 20 October 2011.

Your role in Payday is that you are a part of a small team of high risk, high reward criminals who take the law head-on under some spectacular heists. Ranging from casually walking into a bank before unleashing carnage, to sneaking into a high security facility un-detected to loot extremely valuable diamonds without even firing a single shot. You and your 3 friends will need to work together if you want to walk away cash in hand.

First impressions of Payday is that it is a game with allot of polish, controls feel fluid and natural, nothing about your movement or aim feels stiff or unforgiving. It boasts some very impressive graphics with allot of the map pieces being intractable or capable of taking visible damage. What really shines is the musical score, which fits the current mood to a key. The beat and intensity increasing as stakes raise, hitting a climax as the law enforcement push there biggest assault yet.

Gameplay itself brings alot of new elements to the table unseen in other games of it's genre, though taking some welcome aspects from other 4 player team-based games. Police have a variety of min-boss like classes that will need the right teammate with the right equipment to take down easily. These classes include Bulldozers, which are large officers clad in highly protective armor and a very powerful shotgun, Tazers, which can immobilzase you before shortly causing you to become incapacited if you do not interupt him, Snipers, who cause alot of trouble for close ranged teammates, Sheilds, using riot sheilds to seperate players and Cloaks, who can sneak up on players and nock them out. Payday infact shares alot of elements from the Left 4 Dead series while still doing enough of it's own to make it a fantastic game in it's own merit. Players can select from three classes aswell, leveling up as they collect cash to branch into three different skill trees, being Assault, focusing damage and ammunition, Sharpshooter, being a mix of offensive and defensive capabilites such as trip mines, extra body armor and poweful weapons, and Support, who are experts at medical treatment and bolster some of the heaviest hitting single shot and close range shotguns in the game.

In summary, Payday - The Heist is a great multiplayer game that is a blast with friends, well worth the low price of $20 on steam and will keep you entertained for a very long time if you are a fan of the genre.
